My latest read is Danny Allen was here by Phil Cummings - a fabulous South Australian author, who is visiting us also in week 10 of this term. The book is appropriate for capable Junior School readers or students in the Middle School (it is a Yr 6-9 PRC yellow sticker book).
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It brought back memories of the place that I grew up, living in the country on a farm, living similar experiences. The story is about Danny Allen (based on Phil Cummings' life himself) and his family, his brother and sister, their dog Tippy and their friend Mark Thompson. The kids get up to all sorts of adventures and troubles, including tobogganing on corrugated iron sheets down the sand dunes, their friend Mark getting chased by the Ram Stanley, catching tadpoles at the dam when they shouldn't have been, building awesome tree houses in the pepper trees and an encounter with a snake.
Throughout the story there are hints that something else is going on behind the scenes with Mum and Dad, and the bank...Danny doesn't notice this as he is busy being a young adventurous boy.
Danny's adventures continue in the sequel Take it Easy, Danny Allen, which I will be sure to read very soon!
