Are you enjoying the holidays? I am loving sleeping in and then reading in the mornings! So far this holidays I have read the CBCA Book of the Year for Older Readers Winner - The Protected by Claire Zorn. This is a fantastic read for older readers from Middle School and up.
The story is told from the point of view of Hannah a teenage girl, who has suffered horrendous bullying throughout her life at high school. It all stops when her sister Katie is killed in a car accident. Katie is popular and beautiful, and the kids leave Hannah alone once her sister is no longer around. A new boy to the school, Josh - a bit of a bad boy, befriends her. It is the first time in a long time that Hannah has had a friend, who genuinely cares about her and enjoys her company.
Hannah's home life is very lonely. Her parents are barely coping with their daughter being killed. Hannah's Mum has hardly left the house in the last year since the death of Katie. The parents argue a lot and Hannah thinks they are headed for a divorce.
Hannah's Dad was the driver at the time of the accident, and the trial date is fast approaching. Hannah and her Dad can't remember what happened, but as the story starts to unwind Hannah remembers what happened...
A well written novel, that makes you want to read it all at once. At times it makes you want to cry, laugh, protect her, cry again and feel hopeful.
My name is Mrs Mc, you know me as your Teacher Librarian. I love reading books, but don't always have time to read. The purpose of this blog is to share books that I am reading by myself or with my family. I think I will also share other interesting news with you about books, the Library, RBL, competitions, upcoming events and more. So, tune in!
